The formation and history of Puma shoes is a truly fascinating story, and one that is certainly worth reading!
The story starts with Christoph von Wilhelm Dassler who was a lowly worker in a shoe factory. His son, Rudolf, joined his father but together with his younger brother, Adolf started a new shoe factory.
Their big breakthrough came at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin where they miraculously persuaded persuaded United States sprinter Jesse Owens to use their shoes with then novel spikes. Owens dominated the Olympics with four gold medals and very soon the Dasslers were selling 200,000 pairs of shoes a year.
During WWII the brothers had a dramatic falling out and decided to split the business in 1948. Adolf named his sportswear company Adidas (based on his nickname—Adi—and the first three letters of his last name—Das). Rudolf started Puma and the rest, as they say, is history.
